Everyone heard the expression: One man's trash is another man's treasure. That's what the Foothills Landfill has become for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George. It has inked a deal to sell carbon offsets generated by the methane capture at the landfill. The capture was built in 2002 in order to burn the methane at about a thousand degrees Celsius, converting into carbon dioxide, a less toxic greenhouse gas. The Regional District captures and burns approximately 15,000 tonnes of methane a year. Selling the carbon offsets to the Green Municipal Corporation will generate as much as a million dollars in a three-year period for the Regional District.
